Advice from Doncaster

Following on from Gary's advice, whenever I'm practising om my own I tend to always turn over with the second bowl, as you should always be confident to be able to do this. It's surprising how many bowlers, even in the higher leagues, rarely (if ever) turn over, even when there's one or more woods directly on the land.

I agree it is good to practice turnovers where possible, but in a game i quite often only bowl them if i have the last wood and have room to get it for 2 or to save.

If you turn over before the last wood then this gives your opponent a good idea of the line in to the jack. Not always a good idea if you are on with a good lead. I think this is especially so in pairs.

Even the very top bowlers are not going to pick the correct turnover line first time every time.

Quite often there is no need to turn over, i mean most of the time you can score by either bowling inside the line or outside steering around woods.

Cozza, With all respect, but you wouldn't have the opportunity or get away with it if you played at a higher standard. You will find that out in time, tricky and Hodge were just like you some years ago, however they are still gradually learning the game, mid you don't take any lessons in firing from Ricky, that is one part of his game that really need a vast improvement, isn't that right Rick?

Rarely fire these days, only fire when i need to really blast into the head or to try and alter a mark that someone seems to like bowling up and down. I have certainly taken your firing tips on board though Dave.

I tend to bowl over at the end more with a running wood, i find it more effective.

I don't have a problem with turning over - but don't think it is a good idea to do it unless you have the last wood and as i said above in pairs it can be near fatal. (Not that i am any expert! Unless Whittaker is carrying me!)

On Swan and some of the Harrogate league greens then i may be more tempted to turn over, and on some marks on Swan then the other peg is certainly easier to bowl. But most of the time why are you turning over? Its when they have a wood in the way that you don't want to knock in. But it's got to be near otherwise why not just bowl inside line or outside and play for a length?

However on a green i have never seen before then i may try a turnover if someone has been taking me up and down a mark for a while - there may be an easier way in! But on the whole why make it harder for yourself by having to guess a line and usually slightly different weight.

Crikey Ricky, You sound like a old pro, in my time away it seems that you have matured a bit, however I think we still have to work on your support round the green, that will always be in need of a tweak.

Not sure if i had matured last season - there was a game at magnets where a wood ended up kicked in a ditch (note:- Ricky not proud - apologises to team, though he never does at the time). But thankfully such incidents of petulance seem to be more of a rare occurrence these days.

Just want to get cracking this season- looking forward to the season starting, as I have said on other posts I have been up at the swan practising quite a bit, even in my lunch hours, to try and gain an edge.

Will do what i can round the green, but need to pay particular attention to my own game especially concentration.

Will be good if we get some added support round the green and a kick up the backside when needed (and there is one man who provides this better than most). A reunion would be good.
