Played a left hander tonight and everytime they sent the jack they just said "your finger/thumb" whilst they sent it. They didn't show the jack so I just had to take their word for it.

I know this isn't a tip but was wondering what the exact rule is on showing the bias and what the "punishment" is for not doing it. Anyone know?

The rule, Graham, is that you must show the jack to your opponent before you send it, you do not have to say anything, it is up to your opponent to see what bias it is, if they then ask, you do not have to tell them a thing as you have already shown them. At the very top level, there is very little said as the players just show the jack to each other before it is sent.

I asked them but and they showed it for the next couple of ends but then didn't.

Does that mean I could have had the jack off them then?

No, you can ask for it to be sent back so that they show you it before they send it, you can object at anytime, but then they must adhere to the rule before sending it, basically you should insist and even though its not always nice, stick to your guns and make sure it is shown to you before its sent, it shouldnt be a drama to your opponent, in my opinion, if they get funny its because they have been rumbled or feel guilty.

I agree with everything David says about showing the jack. However one certain way of getting your opponent to tell you and show you the jack is this. If you are not sure due to your opponent not making sure you know then just as he is about to bowl his wood say in a loud voice WHAT WAS THE BIAS. I can assure you that he will make sure you know in future. There is nothing more offputting. Cheers and good luck with this one
