Week 8 Report

Black Swan secured their first silverware of the season after beating Bilton Trojans in an exciting Grange Park Cup final.

The game got underway with a real Hector v Achilles battle between Rose Coker and Chris Allison. Allison finally clinched the match by a single chalk but it was an excellent effort by both competitors

Don Rider and Susie Mitchell followed up with two good wins for the Swan before Ken Plummer and Bob Parker brought the first half to a close with another tight fought 21-20 battle. Trojan Plummer just taking the last vital chalk to secure the win.

Josh Coker got the second half underway in style for the Trojans winning 21-11. It was an acclaimed performance that certainly received plenty of plaudits for this young star with a big future in the game.
With the game sitting at 95-94 in Swan’s favour, it was the turn of skipper Barry Howarth to take advantage for the Swan with his 21-9 win. This was followed up by a good 21-15 win by Peter Nacey.
With everything to do it was a brave effort by Jane Blackburn winning 21-19 but with a final score of 155-140 it was Black Swan who took the crown as Cup winners.

President Derrick Fox congratulated both team on an exciting final and the excellent quality of bowling on show and gave thanks to Bilton WMC for once again hosting an excellent event.

In Division 1 Dave Hodgson 21-6 was the star of the night after another excellent home performance from Black Swan secured a 7-3 win over Wayside. Low Harrogate put in their best performance of the season so far beating Knaresborough Tigers 8-2 despite the efforts of Billy Fox winning 21-9. Phil Hill was in crushing form for Bardsey winning 21-1 against Dacre Eagles. John Jennision 21-8 and Alan Baldwin 21-9 also found the green to their liking as Bardsey went on to win 8-2.

Skipper John Carne 21-8 led Bilton WMC to a 7-3 win over Knaresborough Lions and Bilton Centurions continued to impress as they beat Starbeck 7-3. Maurice Skaife 21-5 and Chris Sunter 21-6 got them off to a good winning start.

Division 2’s best performance of the week went to Collingham after beating Low Harrogate B 9-1. Jeff Ellis 21-9 and Macky Pickering 21-9 finding the best home form of the evening as Sheila Westerman 21-8 gained the vital point for Low Harrogate.

Mike Hatfield 21-5 and Gordon Beattie 21-8 were Wetherby Knights best winners as they beat Almslciffe Climbers 7-3. Pateley Bridge’s winning ways continued after beating Bardsey Ospreys 7-3. In a prelude to their cup match, Black Swan visited Bilton Trojans. The Swan side took the match 7-3 after a very competitive set of games.

John Kinroy’s dominance in Division 3 continued as his 21-7 victory helped Boston Spa to a 6-4 win over Pateley Bridge. Bilton Athenians gained 5 winners on their visit to Bilton WMC. Wins for Stuart Worsnop 21-8 and Ray Carrick 21-8 ensured the aggregate for the Clubmen however leaving the teams sharing a 5-5 draw. Almscliffe Ramblers beat Wetherby Cavaliers 8-2 helped on their way with a good start by Alan Watson winning 21-7.

Knaresborough Badgers climb up the table continues after beating rivals Dacre Falcons 8-2. Joyce Baybutt the best with a 21-9 win. Starbeck put in another good home performance as they beat Wayside Rangers 7-3.

Mal McHugh 21-5 got Knaresborough Foxes off to a good start in their Division 4 tie against Starbeck 3rd team. Ian Robinson cancelled this out also winning 21-5 however as Starbeck took the game 6-4. Mary Cowie 21-7 and David Anderson 21-9 bowled well for Dacre Kites as they beat Bilton Corinthians 7-3. Sarah Ravilious was the difference between Low Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. Her 21-6 win going a long way to ensuring the 6-4 victory for the Tewitt Well team. A strong finish by the back three from Swan ensured a 7-3 win for the league leaders over Low Harrogate. Bernard Ellis won 21-3, Peter Bellerby 21-4 and Ian Voakes 21-8.

There were good all round displays as Knaresborough Hounds met Wayside Ramblers in the 5th Division. Stuart Whitehouse made a good start for the Ramblers winning 21-5, but wins for Bernard Mynette 21-7, Tony Robertshaw 21-9 and Joan Stacey 21-9 ensured a 6-4 win for the home team. Bardsey Merlins were in fine form at home beating Dacre Owls 9-1. Ray Hulbert had the best result of the match winning 21-7. Almscliffe Strollers beat Black Swan 6-4 with help from Harold France 21-6 and Judith Saynor 21-7.
